Student of the Month - Shilpa Dighe

How Shilpa decided on joining Calligraphy in India & not in USA & her experience at RBCS.

It was just about a few years ago that I understood the real meaning of the term "calligraphy".

I have always had a liking towards arts and creative work. It was this inclination and liking that made me study graphic designing and animation.
After completing my diploma in Graphic Design and Animation I got a job as a faculty in a computer institute. Over there after the students completed their course they would get a certificate written in artistic calligraphy.

When I saw these certificates I would stare at them for a lot of time. At first I thought the names were printed but they were written and it looked engraved. I was told that this was a writing technique of artistic letters called calligraphy. After enquiring I met the girl who used to do the calligraphy for the certificates. Her name was Susan. I complimented her and asked her exactly what was calligraphy? Whether it was tough and a whole lot of questions. It was here that she told me she had learned calligraphy from Radio Bhuvan, Mumbai.

As I was living in Pune and busy with my job it was difficult for me to adjust my working schedule and go to Bombay and learn. So inspite of having a lot of interest in calligraphy the idea of learning it was getting postponed.

Then I got married on February 7, 2003. I was thinking just before my marriage, I would learn the course but then too it was not possible. I told my husband that I wanted to learn calligraphy but as I was going to U.S. my husband said I could learn it there.

When I went to U.S. I searched for a course in calligraphy but in all the institutes the calligraphy was just not the same. Not like what I had seen, I just did not like what I saw and so I decided when I go to India I would learn from Radio Bhuvan.
When I came for a visit to India my prime interest was to enroll for the calligraphy course.

Learning calligraphy at Radio Bhuvan from Mr. Chatterjee is amazing. His teaching techniques are such that everything appears to be simple. He has this method of showing how the strokes are done and he teaches it in such a manner that once you see it - it stays in your memory forever.

I am commuting from Pune to Mumbai every Saturday for this course. As it takes 3 ½ hours to reach, one feels a bit exhausted but once I start the session all my fatigue vanishes. After the session is over I feel so good that I have learned so many things

Would I recommend this course to my friends? I sure will!! In just 4 sessions you become really good at calligraphy. Today I feel it is worth the amount of efforts I took. Once again I would say that it was due to Radio Bhuvan and Mr. Chatterjee that I was able to learn such good calligraphy.
